Bat in the Bunk
So, it was this past summer at camp. It was a super hot night. During a heat wave. One of those heat waves where everyone actually liked the temperature of the lake, which, believe me, is crazy. The lake is super cold. Like I think I’m freezing my behind-off cold. Back to the story.
So, we were all super hot. It was late at night, like almost 11, and I was lying under just a sheet with my pj’s on, like 5 seconds away from falling asleep. Then I heard my bunkmate Helen go, “Guys, there’s a bird in our bunk.” Another one of my bunkmates corrected her and said that it was a bat.
Everyone freaked out, and tried to get the bat out of our cabin. I was too tired to do anything but pull my blanket over my head and try to drown out the noise. My bunkmates were running around the cabin screaming like banshees. Eventually everyone ran out of the cabin except me. I was so tired I almost felt dead, and I just didn’t feel like getting out of my bed, because I didn’t really care all that much about the dang bat. My bunkmate Djuna screamed, “Oh my god, we left Annie!” I got up and got out of the cabin.
Two counselors came running over to see what all the screaming was about. My cabin, minus our counselors, went over to the banquet bunk. You see, every year at my camp the seniors do this think called banquet. We make murals and cutouts and stuff like that, and only us and a few counselors know what the theme is. Then on the last night of camp, so people aren’t feeling all crummy about leaving just yet, we cover up the dining hall with the decorations and everyone hangs out and eats and stuff. Our theme was superheroes. Anyway, we all went to the banquet bunk. After a few minutes of hanging around down there, the assistant head counselor, Anna, came down. All of our screaming woke her up, all the way at the top of the hill, in the main lodge, where she and the department heads slept on the top story of it, where there was a bunch of rooms. She wasn’t too dang happy with us, for waking her up and all.
A bit after she left, one of the counselors came down and told us we could go back to the bunk. We went to bed. The next day, I found out we woke up pretty much the entire bunk line. Some of the girls in the age group below us told me they though there was a bear in our cabin, and honestly, I wouldn’t be surprised if we did find some big, dangerous animal in our bunk. A counselor told me she thought someone was being murdered. I will never forget that night.
